Balikpapan: The 16-year-old World No. 51 Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia fought past local shuttler Gregoria Mariska 25-23, 21-12 during women’s singles first-round action at the 2016 Indonesian Masters on Wednesday night.
After the match, 17-year-old Gregoria Mariska appeared dejected after the match as she fell significantly short of her semi-final target.
“I am very disappointed with my performance. I did not play well, thus suffered an early exit in the tournament,” said Mariska.
Goh will take on another Indonesian women’s singles player Desandha Vegarani Putri in the second round.
In men’s singles, independent shuttler Chong Wei Feng who quit the BA of Malaysia (BAM) in May, saw off India’s Siril Verma of India 21-7, 21-9 in 24 minutes. He will play Firman Abdul Kholik of Indonesia next. Another former Malaysian national shuttler Daren Liew also advanced to men’s second round, and will play the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic men’s single gold medalist Shi Yuqi of China in the next round.
Soong Joo Ven and Goh Soon Huat were two other Malaysian men’s singles players who make it to the second round.
Independent men’s doubles Lim Khim Wah/Ong Jian Guo of Malaysia cruised past Indonesia’s Hendrik K Clinton/Wirawan Ihsan Adam 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 on Wednesday and will play Indonesia’s No. 4 seeds Hardianto Hardianto/Kenas Adi Haryanto in the next stage.
Another Malaysian men’s doubles Chooi Kah Ming/Low Juan Shen also came good when they upset No. 8 seeds Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia 22-20, 21-16 to set up a second round clash with Indonesian qualifiers Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan.
