Kuala Lumpur: Anticipation surrounds the 2024 Malaysian Open, with Malaysia’s men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong emerging as a top contender for the championship, as predicted by the legendary Lee Chong Wei. Impressed by Ng Tze Yong’s commitment to overcoming shortcomings and aligning himself with world champions, Lee is optimistic about Ng’s performance in the upcoming season, starting with the 2024 Malaysian Open.

Lee, who recently trained with Ng at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM), highlighted the player’s dedication and focus. Ng, ranked 15th globally, aims to showcase his improved performance, with the first Malaysia Open challenge against Japanese player Koki Watanabe.

Having exhibited positive strides in the 2023 season, including beating several top players including the world number one, Viktor Axelsen from Denmark during the second round of the All-England, in March last year, Ng’s progress is notable. Lee sees Ng on track to secure a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, aiming for two Malaysian representatives in men’s singles alongside Lee Zii Jia.

The 2024 Malaysian Open, scheduled from January 9 to 14 at the Axiata Bukit Jalil Arena, is a focal point for badminton enthusiasts around the world. Lee believes that professional players Lee Zii Jia and men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik have the potential to end Malaysia’s championship drought at home. While acknowledging the tough competition, Lee encourages the players to focus on their preparation and face challenges head-on.

Lee Zii Jia, set to begin against Chinese player Lu Guang Zu, faces a potentially challenging path. The tournament, now a Super 1000 event, demands top-notch performance, and Lee Chong Wei emphasizes the importance of players maintaining focus amid home crowd pressure.

As the badminton world awaits the outcomes, Lee Chong Wei reminisces about his challenging draws during his playing days, emphasizing the necessity for aspiring champions to navigate formidable opponents. He reminds players not to disappoint their supporters and turn the home advantage into motivation.

“It is difficult to perform at home and the pressure is different because we are playing in front of our own supporters who put hope in us. However, I turned this pressure into motivation for me,” said Lee.
